Food manufacturers face continued industrial energy pressure after Autumn Budget

The Food and Drink Federation responded to the 28 October Budget, warning that its measures did not sufficiently relieve the industrial energy-cost disadvantage faced by UK food and drink manufacturers.
28 October 2026 · Energy Utilities Sustainability

What happened

The FDF argues that the Budget does not extend certain industrial energy-support arrangements to food and drink manufacturers and that high UK energy costs discourage investment. This is the trade association’s interpretation of the Budget, not a statement that all food businesses are ineligible for every support scheme. The new event is the Budget outcome; the general energy-price pressure was previously covered by AFME.

Why it matters to food manufacturing engineers

Energy costs affect refrigeration, steam, compressed air, process heating and the business case for efficiency and electrification projects.

Operational impact

Engineering teams need accurate site consumption and tariff analysis; savings in kWh do not necessarily translate into identical reductions in total bills because of fixed and capacity charges.

AFME perspective — what to watch

Budget decisions change investment assumptions, but capital cases should not rely on unconfirmed future support.
