Rounton Coffee expansion shows why utilities infrastructure matters before production growth

Rounton Coffee has relocated into a 6,000 sq ft unit at Teesside Industrial Estate in Thornaby, around three times the size of its former premises and with mains gas and three-phase electrical power available for future growth.

What happened

The move follows an earlier £150,000 commercial-roaster investment. The company says current roasting capability is up to roughly one tonne per day and that the new facility could enable production to double. Green-coffee storage silos have also been installed.

Why it matters to food manufacturing engineers

Production growth often exposes constraints in electrical capacity, gas, ventilation, drainage, compressed air, fire systems, storage and material flow.

Operational impact

Moving into a larger factory creates an opportunity to improve material flow, storage, segregation and maintainability, but simply transferring existing equipment can reproduce old inefficiencies.

AFME perspective — what to watch

Factory expansion is an opportunity to eliminate inherited layout and infrastructure compromises. Engineering should be involved before a building is selected.
