Industrial Refrigeration KPIs for an Engineering Team
A practical KPI set for monitoring reliability, efficiency and capacity of industrial refrigeration systems without drowning the team in data.
Why this matters in food manufacturing Refrigeration dashboards often contain hundreds of temperatures and pressures but few measures that drive decisions. A useful KPI set should show reliability, efficiency, capacity, control stability and maintenance exposure. The purpose is not to create a league table for engineers. It is to identify deterioration early enough to protect temperature control, production continuity and energy performance. 1. Reliability KPIs Track refrigeration-related downtime, plant trips, callouts, repeat faults and time operating with reduced redundancy. Separate nuisance alarms from events that genuinely threaten cooling capacity. Record critical equipment availability for compressors, condensers, pumps and key evaporators. A plant can be running while its resilience is poor because standby equipment is unavailable. 2. Efficiency KPIs Use kWh, compressor kWh per tonne of product where meaningful, and coefficient-of-performance indicators where reliable metering exists. Trend condensing pressure, suction pressure and temperature lift because they explain why energy changes. Avoid judging energy without weather and load context. High ambient temperature or increased hot-product load can legitimately increase consumption. 3. Capacity and control KPIs Monitor room/product temperatures, suction stability, compressor loading,…
