Refrigeration and Ammonia Awareness for New Starters
What you need to know before you go near the plant room.
Words to know Refrigerant: the fluid that carries heat away in a cooling system, a bit like the blood in a body.Ammonia (R717): a refrigerant used in many large food sites. It works very well but is toxic.Plant room: the room where the main compressors and refrigeration equipment are kept.Pressure system: equipment that holds gas or liquid under pressure, which can be dangerous if it fails.Muster point: the place everyone goes in an emergency so people can be counted. Why refrigeration matters in food Chilled and frozen food depends on refrigeration. If the cooling fails, food can go out of temperature in a few hours, and whole batches may have to be thrown away. That's why refrigeration plant is often the most valuable and most critical system on a food site. It can also be one of the most dangerous, because many large sites use ammonia as the refrigerant. On the shop floor A cold store alarm goes off at 2am because the temperature is rising. The engineer on call finds an evaporator fan has failed. Because it was caught…
