AFME-HS-01 Machine Guarding Inspection Checklist
A practical inspection of guards, interlocks and safety devices on food production machinery, with a defect log for follow-up. Dangerous parts of machinery must be prevented from being reached. In food factories, guards are removed daily for cleaning and jam clearance, so they wear, get damaged or are refitted incorrectly, and interlocks are sometimes defeated. Regular, recorded inspections catch these problems before someone is hurt.

Who this resource is for
Maintenance engineers, shift supervisors, health and safety advisers and engineering managers.
How to use this resource
1. Inspect each machine at the frequency set by your risk assessment (monthly is a common baseline for production machinery).
2. Use one checklist per machine. Test interlocks and safety devices with the machine in a safe state.
3. Record every defect in the defect log and decide whether the machine can continue to run.
4. Any defect that exposes a dangerous part: stop and isolate the machine until it is fixed.
5. Review repeat defects; they often point to a design or jam-clearance problem.
